Financial Aid and Scholarships

Northwestern students interested in financial aid should meet with Sue Kwan at the NU financial aid office to determine whether they are eligible for summer aid.  Students at other universities will need to check with their own home financial aid offices to determine their eligibility. The GESI program will offer an extremely limited number of partial scholarship awards. Northwestern applicants will be automatically considered for need-based scholarships.

Also check out this database of study abroad scholarship opportunities and this one.   You may also want to consider applying for the Gilman Scholarship which funds study abroad.  If you are a Northwestern student interested in applying for the Gilman Scholarship, do contact us before submitting an application.

Fundraising Ideas

Past GESI participants have successfully fundraised to cover all or part of the program costs.  Talk to your academic and department advisers for grant opportunities that may be available at your university.

Some students have sought financial support from friends and family by launching personal fundraising campaigns at beextraordinary.org.
