The program fee allows GESI to provide students with expert guidance pre and post departure, additional support in-country, such as community connections, health, safety, logistics, grounding in theory and practice of international development, and opportunities to compare development in different regions.

Summer 2018 Program Fee: $8,706.50 (See full cost breakdown from summer 2017)

As a Northwestern University-affiliated program, GESI charges tuition for two course credits in the summer. The majority of the cost goes to course tuition. The remaining amount goes toward fees associated with the on-the-ground experience, as detailed below.

Fee includes:

  • Tuition for two Northwestern courses, equal to 2 Northwestern credits
  • Lodging and meals in Chicago area during the Summits
  • Local transportation in the Chicago area during pre-departure coursework and final reflection summits
  • Classroom instruction by country-experts, language teachers, development practitioners, and others
  • Country programming, orientation upon arrival, language instruction, and work transportation stipend
  • Lodging and three per day meals provided by homestay family in-country
  • GeoBlue Worldwide Health Insurance coverage, the recognized leader in student travel health plans (required)
  • Access to emergency evacuation coverage from International SOS, the world’s leading international healthcare, medical assistance, and security services company
  • 24/7 on-the-ground support for health, safety, and other issues

Not included in this fee:

  • Travel to and from Chicago for the Summits (students responsible for making these arrangements)
  • Airfare to host country (GESI will organize group tickets at students’ expense; more information will be posted on the Travel, Passport, Visa page when available)
  • Visa fees and immunizations/vaccinations (as required)
  • Spending money: although the amount of spending money students expend during the program varies based upon individual students’ spending habits, countries, and exchange rates, the average amount that students reported spending in 2014 was between $250-$500. Most students used this money for souvenirs, gifts, eating in restaurants, entertainment, and tourist excursions.

GESI Fall program fees are determined by Northwestern tuition rates. As a Northwestern University-affiliated program, GESI charges tuition for four course credits in the fall. Northwestern tuition for the following academic year is announced in the spring and will be adjusted at that time. Fall 2016 costs will be finalized in March 2016. 

Fee includes:

  • Tuition for two Northwestern courses, equal to 4 Northwestern credits
  • Lodging and meals in Chicago area during the Summits
  • Local transportation in the Chicago area during pre-departure coursework and final reflection summits
  • Classroom instruction by country-experts, language teachers, development practitioners, and others
  • Country programming, orientation upon arrival, language instruction, and work transportation stipend
  • Lodging and three per day meals provided by homestay family in-country

All students who are admitted and accept a spot on the GESI program will be billed by Northwestern for the full program fee of $8,404 (less any applicable deposits or scholarships) on May 10th - due June 1st. Flight costs will be billed on June 10th - due July 1st.* 

All students who are admitted and accept a spot on the GESI program will be billed by Northwestern for the full program fee of $16,808 plus the cost of airfare (less any applicable deposits or scholarships) on August 10th - due September 1st.*

*If you withdraw from GESI after submitting a signed online Program Confirmation Form, you will be charged for unrecoverable costs incurred on your behalf by the program office, and your $1000 deposit will not be refunded.
