Parent Voices
Dear Parent,
My daughter, Allie, left for Uganda on June 22, 2007. My husband and I watched her walking to the gate with smiles, bravado, and idealism. Allie was one of the first students to travel abroad with the Global Engagement Summer Institute.
My husband and I thought the trip was dangerous. We had heated discussions about our daughter’s emotional and physical fragility. We wondered if she was really serious about this.
I look back and know that the decision was the right one. Parents, rest easy because this program has been done before. There are contacts and networks in place to ensure things runs smoothly. Health clinics, host families, and NGO partners are pre-screened. Students have the tools they need before going on the trip.
When I met some of the students my daughter was traveling with, I was struck by their maturity, their adaptability, and their awareness that they were all in this together. Each student had different reasons for going abroad, but all were there because of their genuine desire to learn about the world.
Allie returned home a much stronger person, much more capable of handling herself in a difficult situation. She came back more worldly, wanting us ALL to reach out of our comfort zones. I was so proud that she had done it. And I was proud that she now wanted to experience other things similar to GESI. My daughter wanted to learn about other cultures, she wanted to help people by becoming involved in NGOs, she wanted to travel abroad again! And she did, to Oman in fall 2008. Only this time, we said yes before Allie even asked us.
Best wishes to all the parents of future Change-makers,
Judith Bream
