The community of Nancimí in Nicaragua was looking to create safe and healthy recreational activities for their residents, and to build opportunities for employment and economic mobility. In the summer of 2012 a team of GESI students worked there and conducted a series of community diagnostics in order to determine how to best fit these needs of the community using Asset Based Community Development techniques. Based on availability of local resources and the enthusiasm of community members, the group collaboratively designed La Feria Comunitaria de Nancimí (Nancimí Community Fair) where people could meet on weekends to buy and sell fruits and vegetables, prepared foods, and other goods. It is also a very social setting, allowing neighbors to meet one another and build community. La Feria is now run by a committee of local people who look forward to adding more activities to the fair, such as dance contests and baking competitions.
